Had my very first hand gun class last night, had never shot a gun before. Went pretty well I think, now I’m just stuck waiting for my foid card. Plan is a nice safe and a Ruger wrangler to practice with, would like to get a gp100 someday but it’ll be a while, wife is skeptical about guns and I can’t afford another big money hobby right now. The safe is most important to keep the wife happy, probably gonna go with that fort knox one rusty vandura posted a while back.

Kinja'd!!!

Only 7 yards but my very first shooting practice.

It was, driving isn't as satisfying now that I don't like in the rockies so I've been looking for another hobby to pick up the slack. I don't really believe in guns for self defense most of the time but it is fun just to go shoot some paper.

That is important for sure, my wife gets final say for sure, she’s struggled with depression in the past and while she’s doing good these days, we’re still trying to work out a solution that we're comfortable  with, she will definitely not have access. Some ranges let you rent lockers there so I might just do that, but the closest most convenient range does not so we’re considering other options.

That does look cool but I’m not a home defense/carry guy at all, this is purely a toy. As such I’ll be sticking with the manual trans of guns, single action revolvers and maybe a bolt action rifle.

+1 on the GP100. I haven’t personally fired a Wrangler, and it is built to a low price point so it’s mostly zinc and aluminum, but being chambered for .22lr it should still last awhile.

I picked up a GP100 in .22lr earlier this year and it’s been a fantastic target pistol:

10 round group in just an inch and a half at 20 yards, and I’m sure the gun is capable of better. I’m the limiting factor lol

Good on ya! Even if ya never need to use a gun, it’s good to know how. Like a hammer. An d I find it a lot of fun and a stress reliever to just go bang little holes into pieces of paper with my friends. Take your wife with you. A good instructor will know how to talk to her. FWIW, i f you’re r ight handed, y ou’re jerking the trigger. Left down diagonal groups indicate this. Squeeze yer hand as you squeeze the trigger. I keep a hand exerciser , coil spring with handles thingy, that I only use with 3 fingers and thumb to teach my trigger finger to work independently of the rest. Turn it up side down and work just the trigger finger for strength , too.

It’s beautiful for sure , I feel like I’d have to go to the .357 though for the price. I haven’t shot the wrangler yet and I know it’s budget but it’s a nice cheap entry point with positive reviews, especially since I guess we can’t get the heritage rough rider here in illinois. But whenever I upgrade I feel like it would have to be a .357 even though I’d probably shoot .38sp 99% of the time.

I love shooting, it’s a fun hobby. And it sounds like you’re getting into it the right way - with training. Buying a safe is also important.

I’ve been involved off and on in shooting sports since I got my rifle merit badge in Boy Scouts. I now coach a junior rifle team (kids 12-18 shooting 22s and air rifles) and I compete a bit myself. I used to do sporting clay tournaments, have done a few pistol competitions, and now I shoot some 3 gun. I don’t do it often, usually only a couple matches a year, but it’s so much fun. This past weekend I shot the annual Zombie 3 Gun Invitational. I also collect antique firearms and build some of my own.

If you ever have any questions, just ask!

Wife is maybe open to going to the range sometime but is nervous about guns and won't have access to it ever without me, I might just rent a locker at a less convenient range.  I am right handed though so thanks for the advice, it’ll be a while till I get to shoot again though need to get my card first, even to rent a gun at the range.

I’m right handed but left eye dominant. Made sights and scopes awkward feeling for a long time when I was learning to shoot as a kid. When I did my marksmanship cert as a cadet I wore an eyepatch. We had to use old Lee Enfields mk3 I think to do it with. Had to shoot out a target square in under a minute with iron  sights. The casings often got stuck and it took 6-8 pretty perfect shots to do it. Burnt the end of my finger picking casings out to get it done.

take up flying.....certainly not expensive. not at all. nope.

I guess, f ind a cartridge thats cheap, and get a good solid but affordable gun for it. Happieness follows. Googling says the 9mm and .40s&w seems completely universally everywhere and plentiful. .22lr is nice if youre just target shoting or looking for squirrel and rabbit to eat....if that’s your new lifestyle in post-apocolyptiCOVID society. I’m not a gun guy myself, but I appreciate capability through efficient design process and not just brute force.

For sure, thanks! The safety is paramount, my wife has struggled with depression in the past so she will definitely not have access to the gun ever even though she’s doing well now, we’re still working out exactly what that means but I might just switch to a less convenient range that rents lockers there, I’m don’t really believe in guns for self defense most of the time so I don’t necessarily need it in the house. If I can find/afford a secure enough safe that we feel comfortable with the gun would stay disassembled in there and she would obviously not have access. She’s supportive of me wanting to try it as a hobby, just scared she’ll end up back in a dark place someday. I do appreciate antiques or at least retro models, it’s about the mechanical and tactile experience for me so I’m wanting to stick to revolvers I think.

Hopefully by the time you’re ready to buy, the supply/demand will have normalized. Right now the pandemic has caused a massive run on firearms, so it’s a seller’s market. Deals on new and used guns are few and far between.

I was going to say buy the safe before the gun but you seem to have that covered.

Quick story, first time I fired g un was a glock 9m. It was during a competition. I believe it was called “defensive pistols” you shoot at targets to immobilize is the goal. Some shots are standing, others while walking, some behind cover. It is timed and it starts with your draw. My goal was to not shoot my foot. I was proud. I got top 5! Out of about 7 but still....

I understand; suffer depression myself. Twice had a 1911 in front of me, twice my cats have saved me. Her getting comfortable with them can’t hurt. So much negative out there about how awful guns are. They aren’t; they are just another tool. And she might get relief, like I do, but banging of a few rounds.

It would be a revolver of some kind but yes, it will definitely be disassembled in someway if it’s kept in the house even in a safe. But obviously if someone were determined enough they would find a way, gun or no gun, it’s all about thwartin g the first ten minutes or so and she's been very open about where she's at the whole time. I'd probably just hide the cylinder somewhere else or something too.

Kinja'd!!! Khalbali > barnie
10/22/2020 at 20:36

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah it’s possible she would, but I need to get a lot more confident myself first. She’s open to it though, just adamant that she not be able to access it at home so if it’s even at home at all it needs to be locked up and disassembled, might hide the cylinder or something too. They are a tool but I also do think that changes need to happen. I understand people that grew up around them might feel differently but to me it’s just a hobby, if the government ever decided to ban guns completely I’d be the first to turn them in. I’m not advocating for that by any means but there’s no reason for civilians to have ar-15s and the like   IMO.

Maybe down the line but I’m pretty set on the wrangler for my starter, good brand, good price, cheap(er ) ammo, I want to get at least a couple thousand rounds in before I think about upgrading at all. Plus I'd burn through ammo way too quickly with a semi-auto lol, the single action will slow me down.

I disagree entirely that civilians shouldn’t own rifle x y or z. At the end of the day it’s just another tool, and the intent of the user entirely dictates the result. But that’s just like, my opinion man.

Yeah, a .22 makes for a great little plinker. And it’s light enough recoil that your wife shouldn’t have a problem with it if you ever convince her to join you. On the other hand, .45 ACP is, shall we say, rather insistent for a handgun when it comes to recoil.

Huh, and I always found sights harder to use. Lining the two bits up really dinked with my brain. I’ve never shot as a lefty. Always bolt action rifles... besides pump shotguns and the one time I used a lever action rifle. Scopes were okay as long as I could get comfy.
